Martin Guptill (63 from 25 balls) had blasted the swiftest T20I fifty by a New Zealander, from 19 balls, before Munro beat him, the latter nailing half of his 14 deliveries for six to fire the hosts to a crunching victory.Colin Munro smashed 50 from just 14 balls in Auckland.

Sri Lanka’s total hinged on captain Angelo Mathews, who bludgeoned a career-best 81 not out from 49 balls, including four sixes and seven fours after the tourists, who lost the opening T20I by three runs, were put in to bat.

Tillakaratne Dilshan (28) was the only other Sri Lankan to reach double figures as veteran all-rounder Grant Elliott (4-22) destroyed the visitors with his medium pace, Mitchell Santner (2-24) and Adam Milne (2-36) the other wicket takers.

New Zealand openers Guptill and Kane Williamson (32no from 21 balls) cracked 89 for the first wicket in 6.3 overs before Guptill, who thumped five maximums and six fours in his dazzling knock, snicked Thisara Perera (1-26) behind.

Munro then drilled five of his first nine balls over the ropes before completing the Black Caps’ victory by nailing Dushmantha Chameera for a six over deep square.

Black Caps opener Martin Guptill hit the fastest 50 by a New Zealander in Twenty20 cricket, only to be eclipsed a few overs later by teammate Colin Munro.

Colin Munro blasted New Zealand’s fastest Twenty20 half century to surpass a mark set by Martin Guptill earlier in the innings as the hosts swept their two-match series against Sri Lanka with a nine-wicket win in Auckland on Sunday.

Guptill first rewrote the record books when he took just 19 deliveries to bring up his eighth half century in the shortest form of the game before he was eventually dismissed for 63 after smashing six boundaries and five sixes.
Guptill blazed away as the Black Caps chased the Sri Lankan total of 142 on Sunday at Eden Park, with his 50 coming up in just 19 balls.

He and Aaron Redmond had previously shared the record, off 23 balls.

He was eventually out for 63, off 35 balls, as New Zealand cruised towards victory.

But Munro replaced him at the crease – and in the New Zealand record books.

His 50 came up in just 14 balls – he smashed a six to claim the record and give New Zealand victory.

It was the second fastest T20 in international cricket, with India’s Yuvraj Singh holding the record – off 12 balls.

Grant Elliott had taken a four-wicket haul in any T20 game before this. His best before this was the 3 for 16 he took in a domestic T20 against Auckland in 2011-12. This was also only the second time he has taken three or more wickets in a T20 game. Eliott’s haul is also only the fourth time a New Zealand bowler had taken a four-for while bowling third change or later.

This is the first time that all the four bowlers who have bowled for a team in an innings (minimum two overs each) have gone at 10.00 or more an over – all the Sri Lanka bowlers in this match went for 10 or worse.
